After I got fired from Copy Max, I hit up the old job board at Solano Community College. An actual cork board with printed job listings. A company called “Aviation Instruments” (I think) was hiring a part-time office worker. The place refurbished aviation instruments—altimeters, air-speed indicators, compasses, etc. There are a lot of old airplanes out there with old instruments that you just can’t get anymore. So instead of scrapping the whole plane, or paying for an ultra-expensive avionics overhaul, you have a company like Aviation Instruments rebuild the old stuff. I helped with invoicing, part tracking, repair manual organization. It was really neat. The lead repair tech had been in a pretty bad car accident and had to use a cane and leg braces. Still, he was perpetually happy and an absolute artist when it came to repairing instruments. He would always exclaim, “like that?!” in surprise to any mildly amusing story. I miss that guy.
